Catharine got her start in Christian music and faith while studying Nutrition at University. Catharine had a roommate, who played piano for a church. Cook recounts, "The chorus music she played captured me, so simple and yet full of joy and purpose.  The lyrics were like the voice of Jesus calling me - I picked up my guitar and began to sing along and haven’t put it down since." Catharine's favourite musician is Michael Card.

Catharine and her husband, a pastor lived in Thompson Manitoba for 14 years. There in 2000, Cook had a creative breakthrough. She states, "It was like a door opened in my mind and I was able to compose music." The songs spring from a personal struggle with northern living.  Originally from Southern Ontario Cook explains, "I thought it would be bugs, or the cold that would be the greatest hardship in living in the North.  But in a transient community, saying goodbye to people again and again was the most difficult trial."  This is what the album 'Fire Breathing', is about and what Catharine focuses on during her music presentations -  prophets, martyrs and ordinary Christians who step beyond their comfort zones.  It's about entering into situations we fear, like solitude and sacrifice, and  the great reward we find there following Jesus.
